Galen Wetterling, D.O.
Psychiatrist
Welcome to my practice! My name is Galen Wetterling, and I’m a board-certified psychiatrist. I started this practice because I am passionate about building relationships with my patients to provide excellent care. I will take the time to get to know you as an individual. I promise that I will listen, be curious, and collaborate with you on improving your mental health. I am currently accepting new patients, and provide both telehealth and in-person appointments.
Treatment Philosophy
As a psychiatrist, I believe that mental health and personal growth are multifaceted, and that medications may be an important part of that journey but are rarely a “fix” in themselves. Further, as people grow and change, medication needs often evolve as well. I want us to talk about how you make sense of your mental health struggles and how you approach growth and self-care from a wholistic perspective so that we can explore medication in a manner that is psychotherapeutically informed. Ideally, I like to collaborate with therapists and/or other medical providers who are working with you (when they are also willing to do so). This may include helping you identify how to seek out the right kind of therapy, or how to best engage with your established therapist. I also provide psychotherapy to folks who are not already working with a therapist, when I feel my skills are a good fit for your needs.
My Background and Training
I obtained my Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from Des Moines University, completed a 1 year general medicine internship at St. Lucie Medical Center in Port Saint Lucie, FL, and did my psychiatric residency at the Medical Center of Aurora in Aurora, CO. I was nominated to be the Chief Outpatient Resident of my program, during which time I overhauled the resident training curriculum and increased training related specifically to psychotherapy. During residency, I also completed additional elective training in the practice of psychodynamic therapy and integrated medical-psychiatric care.
After graduating, my first job was with the Eating Recovery Center in Denver, CO, where I led an interdisciplinary treatment team of therapists, dieticians, and a nurse practitioner in intensive residential and impatient eating disorder treatment. My wife and I moved to the Amherst area in 2024, and I worked at a psychiatrist at Atkinson Family Practice (a local integrated primary care and mental health/medial practice). While at Atkinson, I provided collaborative psychiatric care across the lifespan, including TMS and Spravato (esketamine) treatments. I opened this private practice in 2025.
